Laptop Theft Exposes 1,700 Arizona Patients' Info

The Arizona Daily Star reports that 1,700 patients' personal and health information may have been exposed when a laptop was stolen from Tucson's St. Mary's Hospital (h/t PHIprivacy.net).

The laptop contained the names, birthdates, medical record numbers and prescription information of approximately 1,700 patients who had received care at St. Mary's Hospital between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2013.

According to the Daily Star, Hospitalists of Arizona learned of the breach on January 15, 2014, and notified both hospital security and law enforcement.

In response, Hospitalists of Arizona says it "has been working in cooperation with authorities to investigate the incident and has taken prompt steps to tighten security and implement advanced encryption techniques."

All those affected have been offered one free year of credit monitoring services.
